Website handoff checklist

Do not switch website help blind.

Use this checklist before changing vendors, taking back a neglected site, or deciding between a small refresh, monthly care, and a rebuild.

Ownership and access

  • Domain registrar login and renewal owner
  • DNS provider, nameservers, and editable record list
  • Hosting, deployment, and billing account owner
  • Admin users, password manager location, and emergency access path

Site health

  • Current platform, theme, plugins, apps, and custom code notes
  • Backup schedule, latest restore test, and rollback process
  • SSL certificate, uptime monitor, and expiration reminders
  • Known broken pages, slow pages, form failures, and checkout issues

Operations

  • Monthly content update queue and approval owner
  • Contact form routing, autoresponders, and inbox owner
  • Analytics, pixels, search console, and conversion events
  • Support inbox, vendor contacts, and emergency response expectations

Handoff decision

  • What should stay unchanged for the first 30 days
  • Which fixes are urgent before cosmetic work
  • What can be handled as a $25 refresh session
  • What needs monthly care or a one-time rebuild

Monetization path

Choose the smallest paid move that fixes the risk.

If ownership is clean and the site only needs a focused change, a one-time website or refresh may be enough. If updates, access, backups, and forms keep recurring, monthly care is the better path.
